Maximizing Server Uptime with Secure Environmental Monitoring


As Internet commerce climbs in popularity, server uptime is essential to businesses. Uptime is a measurement of how long servers remain operational for users without crashing or requiring a reboot. The interactions between servers and their environment often pose a major risk to server availability. A crucial part of sustaining high availability lies in identifying and monitoring environmental threats, which enable prompt response to detected dangers before they escalate.

Rapid changes in temperature and humidity, encroachment of water, power outages, vibrations, human error and invasive intrusions are the most common environmental threats faced by businesses. Each of these threats can be monitored, but their effectiveness varies by the method used.
Typical environmental monitoring tends to constitute personnel observing the physical environment and reporting problems. When employing manual observation, many issues based on human error can arise, such as gaps in monitoring, the inability to recognize threats, accidental oversights, etc.

For example, network administrators often rely on a single thermometer and subjective notions about "comfort" to control the temperature of server rooms and data centers. An individual may move equipment in a room without realizing its impact on the room's airflow, which could result in new hotspots. Increases in temperature can reduce the expected lifetime of hardware or cause a processor to throttle down its performance. Humidity that is too high or low may not be easily noticeable; low humidity in a warm server room may feel more comfortable to a human being, but can be extremely dangerous for servers due to a higher chance of electrostatic discharge. Power outages, “brown outs,” and voltage dips and spikes can cause downtime due to server hardware reboots or permanent circuitry damage, yet personnel may not have realized there was a power problem. An automated environmental monitoring system effectively addresses such weaknesses.

Through immediate detection and notification of threats, dedicated environmental monitoring systems prevent damage to server hardware and maintain necessary high uptime. Typical systems constantly monitor selected areas for environmental threats, which not only include ambient temperature and humidity but also inside the server rack – where early detection benefits are crucial. Other hazards, such as intrusions, are detected by door contact sensors, glass break detectors, tamper switches, and motion sensors. Smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, and liquid water and chemical sensors identify the presence of unsafe events. Such features are usually standard in environmental monitoring systems.

Personnel are immediately notified if the system detects an abnormal condition, allowing execution of preventive actions before a problem occurs. Alerts are often sent over the internet, telephone, or cellular network. Since dispatching all available information to personnel is critical, still pictures or video footage during an alarm are also frequently transmitted. A clear view of the actual changes in the server room can be essential to taking the correct course of action.

While environmental monitoring systems can help to prevent environmental damage to servers, they may not be shielded from such attacks themselves. For example, some environmental monitoring systems on the market may be susceptible to these problems: if power fails in the building, the monitoring system may also lose power; or if the network goes out, it may not be able to report a failure. Therefore, high availability and stability are essential in environmental monitoring systems in order to maximize server uptime, which Network Technologies Inc (NTI) incorporates in its product line.

Installing PlayStation Mobile on a rooted Android device


PlayStation Mobile for Google's Android OS went live for certified devices earlier this week. But what about gamers who want to install the platform on non-certified devices?

Well, if you have a rooted Android-powered smartphone or tablet you just may be in luck. That's right, because XxXPachaXxX and the folks at Android Police have detailed a hack that may allow you to load PlayStation Mobile on your device in just a few minutes with a minimal amount of effort.

Essentially, you need to download and install the latest PSM apk from Sony and flash a zip from a custom recovery like ClockworkMod or TWRP via busybox. A full list of instructions can be found here.

The folks at Android Police managed to successfully implement the hack and test a game titled "Fuel Tiracas" without any issues on a Nexus 7 tablet.

However, one of the games purchased for testing didn't work, so as noted above, this hack may not work for all games and devices. Case in point? The Playstation Mobile store seems to be crashing on an EVO LTE smartphone.

Still, the hack may still be worth a shot for those interested in running PlayStation type games on their non-certified tablets and smartphones.

Fall is upon us and the Thanksgiving holiday season (and all the numerous sales and discounts that arrive around that time of year) is getting ever closer. As was the case every single year, smartphone manufacturers are gearing up right about this time to provide the “best and latest” of the Android ecosystem, in an attempt to gain a place in the smartphone consumer’s heart, mind and wallet.
Some manufacturers have already laid out their cards, while some are preparing to do so in the next couple of weeks. At this point, one can paint a rough image of the best Android smartphones for the fall 2012 season. So without further ado, let’s take the time to review the flagship Android smartphones of fall 2012!

Samsung Galaxy S3

The Galaxy S3 is the best selling Android smartphone ever, so what better way to start our list than with this blockbuster? The hype surrounding the Galaxy S3 has surely faded in the past couple of months, but rest assured that the S3 is still a flagship Android smartphone in the true meaning of the word.

Although the Galaxy S3 was launched back in May this year, the third incarnation of Samsung’s Galaxy S line is still the best Android smartphone currently around. The 1.4 GHz quad-core A9 Exynos 4 processor is the fastest processor currently available on the market, while its 4.8 inch SAMOLED display features a 1280 by 720 resolution (306PPI, but PenTile). While the supremacy of the Exynos 4 Quad SoC is likely to end once OEMs start implementing Qualcomm’s S4 Pro (quad-core Krait) SoC, the Galaxy S3 is still very well prepared to face competitors in the fall 2012 season, and perhaps well beyond. In addition, the Galaxy S3 will only get better once Samsung releases the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for it, an event that Samsung has scheduled for October.
Note: As our tech-savvy readers have undoubtedly noticed, I have only talked about the international version of the Galaxy S3. The US version of the Galaxy S3, one that uses a Qualcomm S4 (dual-core) SoC is still a good smartphone, but it’s really little match for many of the flagships listed in this article.

HTC One X+

When HTC announced their One X flagship smartphone back at MWC 2012, many considered it to be one of the slickest looking device to ever reach consumer’s hands. The HTC One X + is basically an upgraded version of the One X, one that keeps the same sexy design and amazing display, but with a little more processing power.

While the One X + doesn’t really bring a whole lot more to the table when compared to the international version of the One X, the best thing about the One X+ is that its US AT&T-bound version will retain the upgraded Tegra 3 processor, instead of using a Snapdragon S4 processor as its older brother did. The display is as amazing as it was on the One X (many experts still call it the best display to ever grace a smartphone), the internal storage space was bumped to 64GB, while the quad-core Tegra 3 processor has been overclocked to 1.7 GHz per core.
Another great thing about the HTC One X+ is that it will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean pre-installed. I’m just dying to feast my eyes on benchmark results for the HTC One X+, which will be available on AT&T carrying the same specs as the international version. Tegra 3 + LTE: it’s an interesting combination.

Motorola Droid RAZR HD

Motorola has been less present in the news for the past six to eight months than other smartphone manufacturers, say Samsung or HTC. The US Android manufacturer (now owned by Google) is still one of the few manufacturers to add that touch of “unique” to their smartphones, which is something many feel is missing from today’s flagships. The Motorola Droid RAZR HD is basically an upgraded Motorola Droid RAZR, but this doesn’t mean that the latest flagship from Motorola is a poor smartphone (not by a long stretch).

Starting off with the good things, the Motorola RAZR MAXX HD has a great display, unique design, and probably the sturdiest case around (the back is actually covered by Kevlar, although I wouldn’t suggest using it to protect yourself against a drive-by). Another good thing is the fact that Motorola has mostly done away with Android UI customization, meaning that the RAZR MAXX HD offers a pretty close experience to that of stock Android.
On the downside, the dual-core Snapdragon S4 onboard the RAZR MAXX HD is slower than the S4 Pro or the Exynos 4 Quad, not to mention that the reason why Motorola (remember: a Google-owned company) would use 4.0 ICS instead of 4.1 Jelly Bean eludes me. All in all, a great smartphone, although there’s the feeling that Motorola couldhave done a bit better.

LG Optimus G

Given that LG is a company that many Android fans don’t keep close to their hearts, you’re probably becoming a bit skeptical right about at this point. But if you can go beyond your LG-suspicion (assuming you have such feelings for the second-best Android manufacturer based in South Korea), you’ll find that the LG Optimus G is likely to be the best Android smartphone of the fall 2012 season, period.

At a time when other smartphone manufacturers release their first Snapdragon S4 (dual-core) smartphones, LG is really pushing it by announcing a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro flagship. Judging from leaked benchmarks, the S4 Pro really blows everything right out of the water. Add 2 GB of RAM memory and it becomes clear that the LG Optimus G is a beast, albeit a good looking one if you ask me.
The display is up there with the best of them, there’s a 13 MP camera on the back (although in the digital photography world it’s really not all about pixel counts). The way I look at things, the only reasonable downside to the Optimus G will be the LG Optimus UI v3.0, which is regarded as one of the worst custom Android interfaces around.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

On to the phablet territory, the Galaxy Note line has recently accommodated its second member, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The improvements over the original Galaxy Note are evident and make up for a phabulous device.

The Galaxy Note 2 is definitely not for those of you on the lookout for an easily pocketable phone, but if you can handle the large footprint, Samsung awards you with 5.5 inches of SAMOLED goodness (the display isn’t running PenTile, so this is probably the best SAMOLED display currently around). The 1.6 GHz quad-core processor is a beast, the 2 GB of RAM make sure multitasking isn’t a pain in a sensitive place, while the S-Pen (along with the S-Pen optimized apps, of course) makes drawing on the Galaxy Note 2 as smooth as silk. An incredible smartphone overall!

Oppo Find 5

I admit it, when I first read about the specs Oppo is planning to fit inside the Find 5, I stood up, took a couple of deep breaths and read it again. I just couldn’t believe that such a powerful device could come from a basically unknown company such as Oppo. Fortunately, my eyes did not deceive me.

The specs above mean that Oppo will probably be the first company to release a smartphone with a full HD display. At this resolution and size, the PPI spikes like crazy, meaning videos and images will be crisper than ever before. Pack that together with a quad-core Krait processor and 2 GB of RAM, and the Oppo Find 5 is definitely one the most exciting smartphones that I wrote about in the past couple of years.
And like this still wasn’t enough, the Chinese manufacturer claims that the Oppo Find will also be just 6.65 mm thick. If the specs turn out to be real (and judging by the fact that they come via an official press release and not some sort of leak / rumor, I’m betting that they will), this is my next smartphone, and the best smartphone of the fall 2012 season (currently, we have no official release date, but rumors place the Oppo Find 5 release date at some point during this fall).

No longer a concern for the world’s most popular smartphone, Apple’s always-beloved iPhone has finally been outfitted with 4G LTE connectivity to present itself in the same light as some of its renowned rivals in the landscape. Naturally, the ability to browse the web is arguably one of the most prized features with today’s modern smartphones, as they can now take advantage of speedy LTE networks littered throughout the world. However, if we take cellular connectivity out of the equation, mainly because LTE isn’t prevalent in many markets, we’re pitting some of the best smartphones out now against one another to find out exactly which one provides us with the most balanced experience.

On tap for this web browsing comparison, we’ve got the Apple iPhone 5,Samsung Galaxy S IIIHTC One X, and the Nokia Lumia 900. Before we dive right into the nitty and gritty, we decided to run a couple of browser benchmark tests to show us on paper how this quartet fares against one another. However, as we should point out before proceeding, it’s worth knowing that these benchmark tests don’t necessarily represent the true performance of these browsers on an everyday, normal basis. First up on the chopping block is Ringmark, which basically checks whether a specific browser supports a variety of basic and advanced protocols/technologies that many apps nowadays rely on – such as HTML 5. Meanwhile, Browsermark works on the same premise, since it measures the performance of things like CSS, HTML5, JavaScript, and WebGL. Although the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S III, and HTC One X all perform almost similarly to one another with Ringmark, while the Nokia Lumia 900 seems to be left in the dust, it’s Apple’s pride and joy that blows away the competition in the Browsermark benchmark test.

Alrighty folks, without question, the first thing we have to check out before anything else, which is also probably the most important item with most people, is none other than page loads. As we all know too well, all four smartphones are 4G LTE capable, but seeing there are many discrepancies that can arise from that, we decided to test out page loads via Wi-Fi connectivity – to make it a bit more fair, since it’s relying on the same connection. One by one, we loaded up our web site and some other highly visited ones as well, to see how they fare against one another.

Amazingly, it seems as though the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S III cough up the fastest speeds, while the Nokia Lumia 900 seems to take a significant amount of time with most of the sites we checked out. Strangely though, the HTC One X took an extraordinary amount of time loading our web site, but didn’t seem too strained by the others. Worth noting in this comparison, we had both Android smartphones enabled for Adobe Flash support, which of course, contributes to longer times than its Flash-less rivals in Safari and Internet Explorer.

Navigational Controls:

If there’s one thing we can agree upon with all four devices, we have to say that navigational control is no problem whatsoever with them. In fact, all four smartphones are soundly responsive with their navigation – providing that oh-so lovable amount of movement with things such as kinetic scrolling and pinch zooming. However, considering we have to be a bit more meticulous comparing the four, we find the HTC One X dishing up the least amount of fluidity with its performance. Honestly, it’s not bad at all and almost negligible, but when the other three handsets exhibit buttery smooth executions, the HTC One X’s minor blemish does stand out a bit more.


Rendering on the go:

Showing no pause or delay with its rendering of complex web sites, both the Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III take a commanding lead in this department, as they’re both adept in rendering on the fly. Whether it’s zooming in/out or merely scrolling to the bottom of a page like a mad man, these two class-leading smartphones are supremely quick in rendering text and various multimedia content. With Internet Explorer on the Nokia Lumia 900, it maintains a very similar performance, but on very few occasions, there is a slight delay before it’s able to render – resulting in a one-second delay in displaying items on-screen. Unfortunately for HTC’s flagship, it clearly has some nagging hitches to its rendering performance, since it’s occasionally delayed. Specifically, it’s most noticeable when pinch zooming with its blinking like actions.


Real Estate & Detail:

In terms of details and clarity, the iPhone 5 undoubtedly has the edge there with its highest pixel density amongst the bunch – while the Nokia Lumia 900’s WVGA resolution softens things up tremendously. And of course, with the two Android smartphones in this comparison, they have the balanced combination of high resolutions and large screen sizes to make them the ideal candidates. 


Other Noteworthy Features:

Indeed, a lot of emphasis is placed on each handset’s web browsing performance, since as we all know, it’s the bread and butter in what makes the experience so meaningful. Still, there are other tertiary features that aid to complement the experience. With the two Android smartphones, they have support for Adobe Flash to give them that desktop-like experience. Yes, Adobe’s long famous multimedia platform has already made its exodus from the Android scene, but nevertheless, it’s available on these two beauties.

Interestingly enough, all four smartphones employ their own interpretation with sharing functionality – like being able to share a page via Twitter, Facebook, email, text, etc. However, the Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC One X boast the deepest level of sharing versus the bunch, since they’re Android devices and all. Additionally, with the exception of the Nokia Lumia 900, all the other smartphones have a “Reading Mode” that makes pages easier to read.


Conclusion:

Here we are, at the end of a long journey finding out exactly which handset packs along the overall best web browsing experience. Taking all things into consideration, we have to say that the most balanced device for the occasion, has to be Samsung’s offering in the Galaxy S III – though, all are undeniably proficient with the job on hand. Speedy load times, admirable benchmark scores, ginormous display, deep sharing functionality, and a high resolution display pushes the Samsung Galaxy S III just a smidgen ahead of its rivals. Being the new kid on the block, the iPhone 5 flexes its muscles with its commanding benchmark scores, superb details, and speedy performance – making it a great all-around performer as well. Obviously, seeing it’s part of the Android family, the HTC One X is still a wonderful device as well, but there are some rendering issues that prevent it from rising higher. And finally, there’s the sole Windows Phone included in the mix, the Nokia Lumia 900, which is capable of getting the job done – albeit, it doesn’t push the envelope as much as its competitors.

A date and place has been set to reveal the new Jolla smartphone user interface and deliver the Jolla developer story and SDK. Jolla Ltd. will demonstrate the Jolla user interface, based on the recently announced Sailfish alliance OS, at the Slush event in Helsinki, Finland on 21-22 November. Jolla is very excited to be able to share the user interface, and talk about the Jolla SDK and application ecosystem with the developers. Jolla will publish the device information, ID and expected availability before Christmas.

Microsoft on Thursday started sending out press invitations for a Windows 8 event in New York that will kick off at 10 a.m. on October 25th and that will, according to The Verge, lead up to thelaunch of the Surface at midnight on October 26th. The Verge says that “other Microsoft stores” will start selling the tablet starting October 26th although the publication doesn’t specify whether all Microsoft stores will sell the tablet or just a select few.
UPDATE: BGR has just received an invitation for a Microsoft event that will take the wraps off of Windows Phone 8 in San Francisco on October 29th. All in all, it’s going to be a busy week for Steve Ballmer and crew.
